Biggest festival of Nepal ‘Dashain’ begins with religious fervor & gaiety

In Nepal, the festival of Navaratri is being celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety. With Navaratri, the biggest festival of Nepal “Dashain” has started.  The 15 day festival is celebrated in the month of Ashwin. During Dashain people worship goddess Durga.  On the first day, on Wednesday devotees performed Ghatsthapana (traditional urn) and sowed the barley seeds for germination of the auspicious Jamara. The germination ceremony of Jamara was also held at famous Hanumandhoka Dashain Ghar in Kathamndu with Vedic rituals.  On first day of Navratari devotees visiting various temples across the country and offering prayers to Goddess Durga.  On tenth day of festival known as “Bada Dashain” elders give golden barley shoots and put Tika on the forehead of younger members of the family and bless them for peace, progress and prosperity in the life.  People within Nepal and abroad visit their native places to celebrate Dashain festival with their family and friends.  Around 2.5 million people are expected to leave Kathmandu valley to celebrate Dashain.
